| Wellington operates inter-island ferries between North and South Islands, a ferry from Wellington to Days Bay (across the harbour), a cable car from Lambton Quay to Kelburn and has preserved trams operating at the QEII Park near Paraparaumu, north of the city. I have also included a selection of the tourist trams that have been operating in Christchurch South Island) for the last 9 years. |

I hope you enjoy these photographs. My principal photography interests lie in transport. The images you will see were mainly taken around my home town. Comments and critique are welcome. Alan -

 | 8th Feb 2004 | Trams and Buses at Queen Elizabeth Park - 8 February 2004
A family fun day at Queen Elizabeth II Park near Paekakariki was held on 8 February 2004. As a method of transportation (and fundraising) the Wellington Tramway Society put all three operational trams into service and the Omnibus Society had three of their buses on hand to assist in moving the large group who attended down at the beach area. Buses featured are Ex-NZ Road Services Bedford SP3 No. 3583, and ex-Wellington City Transport Leyland Leopards, 1967-built No. 397 and 1978-built No. 462. The trams featured are 151, a 1923 Double Saloon, 159 a 1927 Double Saloon and 239 a 1939 Fiducia - all trams are ex Wellington City Transport stock. This album shows this preserved transport in action. See also the collection called 'Preserved trams at Queen Elizabeth Park' which gives more detail of the electric tramway.

 | 4th Nov 2003 | Wellington Cable Car
The Wellington Cable Car which opened on 22 February 1902, operates between Lambton Quay in the central business district, up 119 metres on an average gradient of 1 in 5.06 to Kelburn, a distance of 785 metres. It begins in tunnel and passes through 2 others on its climb. There are 3 intermediate stations; Clifton, Talavera, where there is a loop and cars pass, and Salamanca. Two cars operate on the system, which is a driven balance rope operation installed in 1979. Alongside the Kelburn Station there is a museum with free entry which houses one of the former cable-hauled grip cars, and below, the former winding gear can be seen in operation. An extension to the museum was opened in December 2005 and is the subject of another collection. The Cable Car carries around 800,000 passengers a year.
